BELCHERTOWN — Kristin Elizabeth Moyer, 39, of Belchertown, passed away at home of natural causes on Tuesday, April 24, 2018.

She was born in Northampton in June 1978 to the late Elizabeth (Rodgers) Moyer and Ronald E. Moyer.

Kristin attended the Northfield Mount Hermon School, where her volleyball and softball teams won the New England Prep School Championships. She also set several individual school swim records and received a Thompson Blanket Award as the outstanding female athlete of her class.

She went on to receive a degree from the University of Rochester in Psychology and Health & Society. In addition to graduating with academic honors, Kristin was also a captain on the swim team and a middle hitter on the women’s volleyball team.

Kristin was a head swim coach over the years for both the Belchertown Stingrays and the Amherst Tritons, as well as for YMCAs in Westfield, South Carolina and North Carolina. She felt most at home on the edge of a pool giving instruction, advice, or heartfelt encouragement to a young swimmer.

As a busy and amazing single mom to two sons, she held down multiple jobs scoring sleep studies, developing her Synergy Massage practice, coaching swimming, and giving individual swim lessons, all so she could be constantly available for her boys.

Kristin loved the outdoors, kayaking, camping, hiking, the Patriots, the Red Sox, and making people happy. Kristin was an active reader, especially in the fields of psychology, sleep, and personal growth. She had a quick wit and a decidedly off-beat sense of humor.

She is survived by her two sons, J.R. Zlogar and Cody Zlogar; her father, Ronald E. Moyer and stepmother Mary Susan Moyer of Pelham; her sister, Courtney (Moyer) Woodruff and brother-in-law Nathaniel Woodruff of Pelham; her nephew, Samuel Moyer Woodruff and niece Elizabeth Jane (Elsie) Woodruff; and her aunt, Dr. Anne T. Rodgers of Hendersonville, North Carolina. She also leaves behind her companion, Matt Bail of Belchertown.  Her former husband is Kevin Zlogar of Amherst.  She was predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth (Rodgers) Moyer.

Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Douglass Funeral Service, 87 North Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA. There will be a memorial service the following day, Thursday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 98 North Maple Street, Hadley, MA.  A private burial is planned for the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Kristin’s name to the Belchertown Stingray Swim Team at 16 Two Ponds Road, Belchertown, MA 01007.

Linwood G. Buczala, 69, of Westfield, passed away Thursday, April 18, at the Genesis Westfield Center.

Born in Springfield, VT on March 2, 1949, Linwood was the son of Helen S. (Mosakewicz) and George Buczala.

The family moved from Vermont to the farm in South Amherst in 1954. Linwood graduated from Amherst High School in 1967. He then pursued a Civil Engineering degree from Wentworth Institute in Boston, graduating in 1969. Upon graduation, Linwood married the love of his life, June Baldwin. 

A resident of Amherst most of his life, Linwood worked on the family dairy farm and orchard. He and his father, George, also were known for their construction skills building houses and other projects in the area. Linwood continued construction work with his sons, Linwood, Jr. and Paul. Linwood was an avid outdoorsman, from hunting and fishing to rod and reel repair and creating lures. He dabbled in wine-making from farm fresh fruit grown on the farm and enjoyed coaching in the Amherst Youth Football league.

Linwood leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, June, his three children, Julie Ann Jacque and husband Eric, Sunderland, Linwood G. Buczala, Jr., Franconia, NH, and Paul J. Buczala of Lisbon, NH, a sister, Judith Shattuck of Belchertown, Grandchildren Toni and Taryn Jacque, Sunderland, Gabriella and George Buczala, Littleton, NH, Kody Buczala, Littleton, NH and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at the South Amherst Congregational Church on Sunday, April 29 at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Association or the South Amherst Congregational Church.

Amherst, Christiane V. Norton of Amherst, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on April 16, 2018, from cancer, with her family by her side.  

Christiane was born in Québec, Canada, daughter of Monique (Samson) Gourdeau and of the late Eric Gourdeau on January 4th, 1955.  She will be lovingly remembered for her generosity, her wisdom and her fun-loving and adventurous spirit that took her from Québec to the island of Martha’s Vineyard, where she met her husband, David, then to Colorado and finally, to Western Massachusetts where she and David settled with their two daughters.  

She cherished time spent with her good friends and her family more than anything.  Many memorable evenings were spent in her kitchen and around the table, talking, laughing and enjoying delicacies.  She also loved meeting new people and learning their stories.  She prided herself on making connections between her new and old friends and her family. 

She had an impressive work ethic and was successful in all the positions she held during her life, first as an esthetician and then as an administrative assistant at a dental office, at the University of Massachusetts and most recently at an accounting firm.  Perhaps the greatest joy in her life, however, came from her role as a devoted mother and grandmother who was so proud of her children and grandchildren.  

She will also be remembered for the grace and dignity with which she faced her illness.  Determined to enjoy the last couple of months of her life, she delighted in visits from her friends and family, sharing stories, jokes, lots of chocolates and extravagant desserts and inspiring us all.

Christiane is survived by her two daughters, Vanessa Duffy and her husband, Brian Duffy,  Amanda Norton and her husband Brian Durie, her grandsons, Samuel and Benjamin Duffy and her partner, Daniel Thibodeau.  She is also survived by her mother, Monique Gourdeau, her sister, Elisabeth O’Rourke, her brothers, Frédéric and François Gourdeau, her partner Daniel’s family and her many cousins, nieces and nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law with whom she was very close.  She was predeceased by her husband, David Norton, her sisters, Danielle, Sylvie and Mireille Gourdeau and her father, Eric Gourdeau.      

Please join us in a celebration of her life at 11 am on Sunday, April 29th at the Log Cabin, 500 Easthampton Road, Holyoke, MA. All family, friends and others whose lives Christiane touched are invited to attend. In respecting her wishes, a private burial will take place at an earlier date.

Amherst, Dr. Richard Ellsworth Mudgett died April 10, 2018. Born November 4, 1925 in Boston, MA to Anna Field Mudgett of Philadelphia PA and Richard Ellsworth Mudgett, Sr. of Boston. His wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Marion Reino Mudgett, died in 1987. Survived by his partner of 25 years, Carol A. Lee of Amherst; three sons, David Richard Mudgett and wife Judy Carol Shrum Mudgett of State College, PA; Richard Mudgett Caiander and wife Louise Homstead of Shelburne Falls, MA; and Daniel Field Mudgett and wife Jean Ly Mudgett of West Windsor, NJ; grandchildren Carolyn Elizabeth Mudgett and partner Brandon Michael Wagner of Bensalem, PA; and Carter Daniel Mudgett, Emma Rose Mudgett, and Logan William Mudgett of West Windsor; Carol’s daughter Amity Lee Bradley of Amherst and her children Owen and Ellis Bradley; niece Deborah Chadbourne Schneider and husband Ronald Schneider of Tyngsboro, MA and their children; nephew William Chadbourne and his wife, Jan Potter Chadbourne of Florida and their children; and niece Janet Smith and husband Timothy Smith of Lake Placid, NY, and their children. Dr. Mudgett served with the 3rd Marine Division Joint Assault Signal Company during World War II on Guadalcanal, Guam, and Iwo Jima. Completing electrical engineering and business degrees under the GI Bill, he worked in the electronics industry and raised a family in Boston. He was active in church, outdoor activities, and coached Little League baseball. Then after completing a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, he spent the remainder of his career as a Food Science and Engineering professor at UMass Amherst, retiring in 1994. He and Carol traveled extensively and were active in the adult learning community while residing in Amherst for the last 25 years.

Calling hours will be Monday, April 16, 2018 from 10:00-11:30am at the Douglass Funeral Service in Amherst. A funeral service will be at 11:30 Monday at the funeral home, burial with Military Honors will follow at Wildwood Cemetery.

Amherst, Evelyn G. Crossman, 82, died Tuesday April 10 2018 at the Center for Extended Care, Amherst. Evelyn was a 1954 graduate of Amherst High School and married her beloved husband of 63 years, Roger, right after graduation. Sadly, Roger predeceased her just six weeks ago. Evelyn was a longtime employee for Umass at the infirmary. After retirement she and Roger spent 17 winters in Florida. She enjoyed vacationing in Maine, Nascar racing, Country music, playing cards and doing puzzles.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter Peggy son Edward and wife Song, grandchildren Mary and Matthew, as well as his great-grandchildren Calina, Tiana, Siana, Damon and Claire, her sister In-law Ann Weston and several nieces.

Funeral services will be Tuesday April 17, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Douglass Funeral Service, Amherst a calling hour will precede the service from 12 – 1pm.  Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery.

Amherst, Harrison Lewis Gregg, 76, passed away on April 2nd, 2018 at Bay State Hospital after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He faced his illness with the humor, dignity and grace with which he lived his life. He leaves his wife Nancy Nell (Lynch) Gregg, 76, daughter Leah Charity Gregg, 43, son Evan Gregg, 38, son-in-law Scott Jackson, grandson Jacob, 9, dog Daisy, 10, and cat Hazel, 7, as well as other family and life long friends spread throughout the country.

Harrison was born May 16th, 1941 in St Paul, Minnesota to Lewis H. and Verna Sylvia (Stolpe) Gregg. At a young age his family moved to Russell, Minnesota and later to Wichita, Kansas where he graduated from Southeast High School in 1958.  He moved to Western Massachusetts in 1971 with his wife Nancy, and remained there until his passing.

Harrison was known for his keen intellect and sharp wit. He graduated from Harvard University in 1963 and attained a Masters Degree in Literature from UMass, Amherst in 1978. He was a renowned authority on the poetry of Emily Dickinson, participating in and leading several discussion groups on the topic.  For many years he led the Emily Dickinson Walk on the anniversary of her death and became a guide at the Emily Dickinson Museum upon retiring from his administrative position at Amherst College in 2012.  He was also an avid composer of limericks and light verse and lover of wordplay of all kinds.

Harrison believed in public service and civic engagement and followed a strong moral compass.  While attending Harvard he took a year off to work in the head office of the Peace Corps in Washington DC shortly after its inception.  There he met his wife of 47 years, Nancy.  Together they became active in the Civil Rights movement, participating in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.  After serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the Vietnam War he joined Nancy in Washington DC where they participated in anti-war demonstrations. Harrison’s dedication to public service is most exemplified by his 19 years as the Town Moderator of Amherst and his work with South Congregational Church.

Harrison had many other interests including music, art, film, history, and baseball. With his family he explored much of the United States through long car trips to national parks and historic homes like The Carter Fold in Hiltons, Virginia. For many years he played clarinet in the Amherst Town Band and enjoyed singing in South Congregational Church choir and the Pioneer Valley Symphony chorus.

Wyman, David S., A Memorial Remembrance for David S. Wyman will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday April 15th, 2018 at South Congregational Church in South Amherst, MA.  (1066 South East Street, Amherst, MA 01002) 

David died peacefully on March 14th, at his home in Amherst following several years of declining health.  It was his fervent wish to remain at home until the end.  

He was born March 6, 1929 in Weymouth, MA to Hollis and Ruth (Sword) Wyman, and grew up during the Depression and World War II in Auburndale, MA.  He married Midge Smith, a college classmate, in 1950. 

David began teaching history at the University of Massachusetts in 1966, remaining there until his retirement.  In the 1980s, he was one of the founders of the Judaic Studies Department.  He is known for his best-selling book, Abandonment of the Jews, published in 1984, as well as several other writings about the holocaust and is viewed as a leading scholar on the American response to the holocaust.  His work continues at The David S. Wyman Institute of Holocaust Studies in Washington, DC.

David’s other great interest was baseball, especially minor league baseball.  During his retirement he traveled throughout the United States and Canada to locate sites of minor league ballparks and research their history.  His hope of writing a book on this subject ran out of time.  He also loved nature, being outdoors, and smelling blossoms. He and Midge took many long walks in the woods, usually with a dog or two.  He loved animals, particularly dogs, and especially greyhounds.

David was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife, Midge, in 2003, his brother, Hollis, and a sister, Patricia.  He is survived by his youngest sister, Nancy Spraragen, of Oakland, CA, a son, Jim Wyman of Ashford, CT, a daughter, Teresa Wyman of Canterbury, NH, two grandchildren, Tom Wyman and Katie Harden (Brian), of Minnesota, a great-grandson, Ralph Harden, and several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
