Amherst, Dr. Richard Ellsworth Mudgett died April 10, 2018. Born November 4, 1925 in Boston, MA to Anna Field Mudgett of Philadelphia PA and Richard Ellsworth Mudgett, Sr. of Boston. His wife of 40 years, Elizabeth Marion Reino Mudgett, died in 1987. Survived by his partner of 25 years, Carol A. Lee of Amherst; three sons, David Richard Mudgett and wife Judy Carol Shrum Mudgett of State College, PA; Richard Mudgett Caiander and wife Louise Homstead of Shelburne Falls, MA; and Daniel Field Mudgett and wife Jean Ly Mudgett of West Windsor, NJ; grandchildren Carolyn Elizabeth Mudgett and partner Brandon Michael Wagner of Bensalem, PA; and Carter Daniel Mudgett, Emma Rose Mudgett, and Logan William Mudgett of West Windsor; Carol’s daughter Amity Lee Bradley of Amherst and her children Owen and Ellis Bradley; niece Deborah Chadbourne Schneider and husband Ronald Schneider of Tyngsboro, MA and their children; nephew William Chadbourne and his wife, Jan Potter Chadbourne of Florida and their children; and niece Janet Smith and husband Timothy Smith of Lake Placid, NY, and their children. Dr. Mudgett served with the 3rd Marine Division Joint Assault Signal Company during World War II on Guadalcanal, Guam, and Iwo Jima. Completing electrical engineering and business degrees under the GI Bill, he worked in the electronics industry and raised a family in Boston. He was active in church, outdoor activities, and coached Little League baseball. Then after completing a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, he spent the remainder of his career as a Food Science and Engineering professor at UMass Amherst, retiring in 1994. He and Carol traveled extensively and were active in the adult learning community while residing in Amherst for the last 25 years.

Calling hours will be Monday, April 16, 2018 from 10:00-11:30am at the Douglass Funeral Service in Amherst. A funeral service will be at 11:30 Monday at the funeral home, burial with Military Honors will follow at Wildwood Cemetery.

The family wants to thank the hospice staff at the Fisher Home in Amherst for their support.
