LESLIE LAWRENCE ALLEN of LEVERETT, MASS, October 13, 1940 – March 22, 2018
Leverett, Leslie Lawrence Allen age 77, died suddenly March 22, 2018. He was born in Northampton October 13, 1940 to the late Fred and Ruth Allen. Les, as he was commonly known, grew up in Amherst, graduating from Amherst Schools. He had a lifelong career in Foodservice, working at Amherst College, Westfield State and retired from UMass Catering in 2000. After retirement he worked part-time as the Leverett town building Custodian. He loved to volunteer: Serving on the 1st Board of Health for Leverett, many years on the Leverett Fire Department and was chief for 3 years, as a Trustee and Camp Manager for Camp Anderson (now known as Camp Pine Brook) and Volunteered at the Leverett Transfer station where he worked with the Rattlesnake Gutter Trust to Collect and recycle bottles and cans to raise money for the program as well as helping to collect many pounds of aluminum tabs to donate to the Shriners Hospital.
Les was a lifelong sports fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and UMass Basketball. His other hobbies included Gardening and keeping his beautiful yard mowed. He loved the ocean, lighthouses, deep-sea fishing, and spending time with family and friends and was well known for his Pancake Breakfasts, Chicken BBQs, and Ham Dinners; plus his jams, jellies and Holiday breads.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Teresa Gaskalka Allen of Leverett, sons, James and Wayne Allen both of Leverett, MA daughter, Laura Looman of Shelburne, MA married to John Looman, four granddaughters, Sydney and Chelsea Allen, Erika and Brooke Looman, daughter- in- law, Dawn Berne Allen of Granby, MA. He is also survived by his two sisters, Nancy Murphy of Northampton, MA and Edwina Kreps of Turners Falls, MA and two brothers, Harvey Allen of Amherst, MA and Ted Allen of Florida/South Carolina, three brother-in-laws, Gordon Murphy, Bill Kreps, Raymond Gaskalka two sister-in-laws, Sue Allen, Barbara MacEwan and several Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law George MacEwan and sister in-laws Shirley Gaskalka and Doris Allen.
The family would like to thank and recognize the Leverett and Amherst EMT members who came and helped Les over the past few years.
Calling hours will be Tuesday March 27th, from 4-7pm, at the Douglass Funeral Service, Amherst, MA
A Graveside service will be Wednesday April 11th at 10:00 am at the East Leverett Cemetery with a celebration of life following at Camp Pine Brook 210 Lakeview Rd. Shutesbury, MA 01072
