MARGARETE VINSKEY of AMHERST, MASS, March 5, 1920 – February 21, 2014
AMHERST, Margarete Vinskey, 93, passed away on February 21, 2014. She was born in Weisswasser, Germany on March 5, 1920. During World War II she fled from eastern Germany to the city of Wiesbaden where she met and married George Vinskey, an Army Air Corps officer. Margarete returned with George to the United States in 1949. Margarete was dedicated to all five of her children. She made a career of lovingly raising them while serving as an Air Force officer’s wife. She lived in South Dakota, New Mexico, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts as well as Germany, Canada, Thailand and the Philippines. Through her travels she befriended numerous people, including a group of teachers at the American School in Germany as well as residents and staff at The Arbors of Amherst. As a young woman, Margarete was always interested in becoming a doctor, but the tumult of World War II prevented realization of that goal. Instead, she found fulfillment as a Red Cross volunteer at military hospitals. Her attention to detail and order was always welcome in the medical environment. Margarete was predeceased by her husband, George of Amherst, MA; and son, Wolfgang (Gloria) of Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her children, Joseph of Dayton, OH; Margarete of Washington, D.C.; Michael (Patricia) of Shutesbury, MA; Thomas (Jennifer) of Ulster Park, NY; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be April 18, 2014 from 4-6PM at Douglass Funeral Service, Amherst, MA. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
