AMHERST, Julie Firman died peacefully on July 24, 2012.

 

Juliet Talcott Fisher Firman was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1919, attended High School in Scarsdale, N.Y. and went to SweetBriarCollege. She married Win Firman in 1941.  Julie completed college at ButlerUniversity and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in psychology from BridgeportUniversity. After a number of years of teaching, she retired as Assistant to the Headmaster of Buckley Country Day School on Long Island, N.Y.   

 

As a second career, Julie trained and became licensed as a psychotherapist and had a practice in N.Y.C. She was also on the staff of the Foundation for Religion and Mental Health in WestchesterCounty, where she trained others and led groups. During this time Julie and her daughter Dorothy began leading mother and daughter workshops and became nationally known for their work in that field. They wrote three books on the mother/daughter relationship including the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Mother and Daughter Soul, co-authored by Frances Firman Salorio, Julie’s older daughter. This book has been published in more than 10 countries.

 

In 1999, Julie and Win moved from Savannah, Georgia to Amherst, MA where both their daughters live. Julie continued to lead workshops into her 86th year, becoming a model for women and elders. She is a friend to many in Amherst, Savannah and throughout the United States. Julie is survived by her husband Win; three children, Frances, Thomas and Dorothy; eight grandchildren, Cynthia, Jody, Linsay, John, Sarah, Ashley, Tom and Tim and six great-grandchildren, Sarah, Mia, Sophia, Stephen, Isabella and Julia.  A loving wife of seventy-one years, a caring mother and an inspiration to all, Julie is deeply missed.
