MARJORIE MAE BABB of NORTHAMPTON, MASS, February 23, 1931 – August 23, 2017
Northampton, former longtime Amherst resident Marjorie Sanderson Babb, 86, mother, grandmother, business woman, friend, and community volunteer, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at the Rockridge Retirement Community. Marj was born February 23, 1931 at the family farm house in Whately, the daughter of the late William E. and Madeline {Gifford} Sanderson. She attended local schools in Whately, and was a graduate of Deerfield High School, class of 1948. She later graduated from Northampton Commercial College. Marj began her business career as the bookkeeper at Frampton Buick in Amherst. She owned and operated Pray Street Laundry, Amherst Sunshine Ice, Amherst Sunshine Center Laundromat, and Amherst Sunshine Car Wash for over 40 years. She was a member of the Whately Grange for 72 years, the National Grange, and the Whately Historical Society. Marj was an active member of the Amherst Senior Center, a member of Amherst Police SALT, a precinct warden for Amherst elections, and a generous supporter of every charitable request she received. Marj always had a smile for everyone and will be dearly missed by those who love her. She will be remembered for the countless acts of kindness she gave to those most in need. She was adored by her family and is survived by her two sons Raymond, his wife Melanie and their daughters Marisa and Mackenzie and Richard, his wife Connie with their children Richard and his wife Kristin, Andrew, Ashley, and James. The family is very grateful for the loving care given to Marj by Dr. Andrew Hall, Rockridge staff, Comprehensive Home Care, and Cooley Dickenson VNA Care. A Memorial Service will be held at the Whately Congregational Church at 10:30 on Wednesday, August 30 followed by acommittal service in Whately Center Cemetery. NATHAN GOODWIN SHERWOOD of TOPSFIELD, MASS, September 26, 1923 – August 10, 2017
Amherst, Nathan G (Nate} Sherwood, 93, passed away on August 17, 2017 at Sea View Retreat in Rowley Massachusetts. Born in Huntington Massachusetts, son of the late Grover and Beatrice Sherwood, Nate was a long-time resident of Hadley graduating from Hopkins Academy in 1942. He served in the Army Air Force during WII being one of the “Greatest Generation”. He graduated from Stockbridge School of Horticulture at UMass.
Nate had a heart of gold, a quick smile and a robust laugh. He was generous with time and resources.
He served as senior correctional officer for the Hampden County Jail, managing the Jail Farm, for 50 years, retiring as a lieutenant. He and his family lived in Agawam Massachusetts. He attended the Agawam Congregational Church where he served as a deacon. He served on the Agawam Beautification Committee. As a child and after retirement he lived in the Hockanum area of Hadley where he attended the Hadley Congregation Church.
He is predeceased by his wife Barbara A. Sherwood. He is deeply missed by his daughter Cathy Ann Morgan, son-in-law Bob Morgan, granddaughter Rebecca Moore, grandson-in-law Brian Moore and great grandchildren Brianna and Joshua Moore.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday August 24, 2017 at College Church in Northampton, Massachusetts. NANCY E. {WOODARD} HARGRAVES of RACINE, WI, February 7, 1963 – July 27, 2017
Racine, WI – Nancy E. Woodard Hargraves, 54 of Racine, Wisconsin died unexpectedly
July 27, 2017. She was born February 7,1963 in Northampton, the daughter of Philip
Woodard and the late Catherine (Danahey) Woodard of Leverett.
She was raised in Leverett and educated in Leverett Elementary School and was a
graduate of Amherst High School.
Nancy worked many years as a care giver at local nursing homes before moving to
Wisconsin. Her friendly demeanor and caring heart ensured a smile for everyone she
cared for. Nancy was a devoted mother and grandmother, and her children and grandson
brought great happiness into her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Tierney Butler and grandson Jackson Ulicky of
Illinois, her son Jordan Hargraves and her former husband Ramon Hargraves of Wisconsin. Her late husband, Rob Butler, predeceased her.
Nancy, being the youngest of 10 brothers and sisters leaves Sandra McMahon of
California, Alan of Michigan, Gerald of Erving, Patricia Page of Pelham, Martha
Woodard of Florida, Brian of Vermont, Wayne of Sunderland, Daniel of Northfield, and
Neal of Leverett. She also leaves many nieces and nephews and many other relatives
and friends. Her mother Catherine passed away in 2014, and her father Philip lives in
Leverett.
Private funeral services were held at the Douglass Funeral Service in Amherst. Burial
was in St. Brigid’s Cemetery in Hadley.
Donations in Nancy’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

CAROL E. HARGRAVES of RACINE, WI, February 7, 2017 – July 7, 2017
JUDITH PARKER of NY, NY, January 25, 1925 – August 15, 2017
Amherst, Judith Parker, age 92, died on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at New York
Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She was born
on January25, 1925, in Amherst, Massachusetts to Frank and Marcella Prankunas. She
graduated from the Mary A. Burnham Schoolfor Girls in Northampton and Simmons
College in Boston. Judith moved to New York City and enjoyed along career, notably
working for the Continental Can Company, Mobil Oil Corporation, and the Fashion
Institute of Technology (FIT), but maintained her ties to Amherst throughout her life.
She is survived by her sister, Frances Fulcher of Alexandria, Virginia, nephew
Richard Fulcher ofWoodland Hills, California, and great nephews Frederick and
Woodrow. A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 21, 2017 at 1:00PM at
St. Brigid’s Cemetery, Hadley. There are no calling hours.
