Marjorie P Herbert, 91, passed away Dec 5, 2020. She was born Oct 12, 1929 in Leverett to Fordyce and Bessie Ball. She was a graduate of Amherst High and was employed by Cowls Lumber Yard. She is predeceased by her husband Coleman Herbert and son Kevin Herbert. Marge is survived by her grandson Steven Herbert and many nieces and nephews. Jacqueline (Jackie) Cotner Adrion, 74, passed away unexpectedly on November 28, 2020 at her home in Amherst, Massachusetts. She was born on February 1, 1946 in Ithaca, NY to the late Walter Wendell Cotner and the late Coral Jack Cotner.Jackie grew up in Ithaca, NY. She graduated from Ithaca High School in 1963. After high school she attended several colleges, including SUNY Cortland and Ithaca College, and graduated from Western Connecticut University in Danbury CT in 1969 where she received a degree in education. She attended graduate school at The University of Texas Austin where she received a master’s degree in Special Education in 1970. She went on to have a long teaching career in New York, Texas, Oregon, and Massachusetts. She retired from Belchertown Massachusetts Public Schools in 2008, receiving recognition for distinguished service from the Massachusetts Teacher’s Association, among other commendations from state and federal representatives.

Jackie married William Richards (Rick) Adrion in 1971 in Ithaca, NY. They were happily married for 49 years. Rick retired in 2011 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and remains active as a Professor Emeritus of Computer Science. During their marriage, they had the opportunity to live in Texas, Oregon, Virginia, California, France, and Massachusetts and to travel extensively in 48 states of the U.S., Europe, and the Caribbean.

Jackie will always be remembered as incredibly kind, thoughtful and friendly. She was an excellent cook and baker (even if known to be a bit of a perfectionist in the kitchen) and loved to research recipes and share them with family and friends. Her daughters have many cherished memories of baking with their mom. Jackie was a great supporter of her daughters’ athletic endeavors. She held various volunteer roles with the Amherst Tritons Swim Team throughout the 1980s and 90s, and attended every junior high and high school swimming, cross-country and track meet her daughters competed in (as well as many college meets). Jackie was always there cheering the teams on, often bringing along a big batch of homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for a post-meet reward.

Jackie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Calvin Buchanan Cotner.

Jackie is survived by her spouse, Rick of Amherst, MA; daughters, Carrie Serra and her husband Marc, of Tucson, Arizona; and Emily Adrion and her partner Joseph Casillo of Edinburgh, Scotland; and two grandsons, Taylor Serra and Cameron Serra of Tucson, AZ.

Due to the COVID pandemic, there will a private family interment. A memorial service is planned for spring of 2021.

Helen Elizabeth (Douglas) May of Amherst, Massachusetts passed away from natural causes on Saturday Nov 29^th.  She was 97 years old.

Helen graduated from Greenfield High School in 1941 and earned a nursing degree from Franklin County Public Hospital in 1944.  She worked as Registered Nurse almost her entire life. 

While her family is deeply saddened, they are grateful to have had such a kind, loving, genuine and easy-going human being for their mother.  They are thankful for all their happy memories and those that have been shared with them by so many.  Helen loved her children and grandchildren deeply.  She was happiest holding a new baby or engaging young ones in endless games of make believe or a project with just a pair of scissors and a box.  She also loved strong coffee (sometimes three pots a day!), the ocean at the Cape, late night games of Scrabble, complete with popcorn and milkshakes, the crossword puzzle, and just being with her family, particularly if she was the last one to bed.  She had a great sense of humor, often getting silly laughing over nothing. She always made room at the crowded kitchen table for her children’s friends and would be disappointed if they didn’t eat something. We love you more, Mom. 

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Clinton Earl May, whom she married in 1946.   She is survived by her seven children and their partners, Priscilla (May) Page of Amherst, Geoffrey & Gretchen May of South Deerfield, Peter May & Ellie Gellman of Leverett, David and Cynthia May of Ponte Vedra, Florida, Jonathan May and the late Elizabeth Clarke of Sound Beach, New York, Emily (May) and Peter Markavage of Moraga, California, and Sarah May and Tom Kuchta of Hollis, New Hampshire. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2021.

Linda Louise Martin, 70, passed away at 6:30 PM, Sunday, November 22, 2020 at her home in Amherst, MA. She was born on October 11, 1950 in Bessemer, MI to Victor and Elsie Yalonen. She married David Martin on August 31, 1974.

She is survived by her three daughters Amber Cano-Martin, Kristin Martin, and Joelle Martin; her brother John Yalonen; her grandkids Carlos Cano-Martin, and Javier Cano-Martin; and several cousins.

Her parents and her husband David preceded her in death.

Linda graduated from Michigan State University as a Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and settled in the Lansing area. There, she met and married David while they worked together at the WJIM radio station. In 1988, Linda, David and the kids moved to Westchester, NY and continued to build their family, staying in the same house for nearly 20 years.  

Linda was a career woman, and was able to adapt and reinvent herself over the course of years. There was never a break in her employment, and her talents in public relations were highly sought after. Despite this, she was able to give her family an equal amount of attention. Linda was a loving mother and wife, and always gave her time and help where it was most needed. 

In her spare time, Linda was an avid reader and writer, and often enjoyed taking walks with her husband or children. She loved to bake and make home-cooked meals for her family when time permitted, and kept in touch with her many friends and family through letters and phone calls.

Brian McColgan, 79, of Amherst, MA, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Saturday, November 14, 2020. Born March 27, 1941 in Paterson, NJ, he was a champion distance runner into college, when his Olympic dreams were cut short by a serious accident. Brian turned to travel; he lived in Big Sur, CA and Lake Placid, NY before setting in Montague, MA with his wife Barbara White. He traveled to Europe, Central America, and all over the United States, but Western MA remained his home. His 50-year professional career began designing and building custom homes and led to commercial construction, building stores spanning the East Coast.

Brian was a warm, kind man in all aspects of his life. A life-long charitable donor, he once volunteered to build a school in Nicaragua. He could fix or build anything and was a self-taught painter. He loved to gather with friends and family to cook his famous blueberry banana pancakes, cheer on his favorite sports teams, or visit the family lake house in Norway, ME.

Brian leaves his beloved wife Lynda Faye, his daughters Molly McColgan (Husband Ted, Children, Bridget and Max) and Carrie McColgan-Branson (Children, Lydia, Josephine, and Lucas), and his brother Barry McColgan (Wife, Nancy, Children, Jed, Ryan and Kara). He also leaves his step-children, Matt Stoffolano (Child, Mara), Adam Stoffolano (Wife, Melissa, Children Luciano and Noah), Tessa Hill (Husband, Eben), and Arielle Henson (Husband, Jesse). His family was the light of his life.

A celebration of his life will be held in the Spring of 2021.
