The Douglass Funeral Service, was founded in 1835, and originally served families throughout the Connecticut River Valley. The stately Victorian setting that it currently occupies was built in 1898. A large Chapel was added in 1964; but, other than that, the warmth and homelike atmosphere of its era remains intact. The uniqueness of the downtown Amherst setting, on the main street with ample parking, in the middle of three colleges, and neighbor to an array of businesses attributes to the service and reputation Douglass Funeral Service has had over the decades and maintains today. The director and owner, Ronald D. Lashway Sr., a native of Amherst and youngest of ten children, has survived the attrition of the town and more relevant, the industry.
Here at Douglass, because of the large college population, the opportunity of serving families of all denominations, races, beliefs, a certain uniqueness that can rarely be found exists. We presently serve the Jewish Community of Amherst, a wide spectrum of Christian faiths, Baha’i Faith, several Eastern Religions, and a large Hispanic and African American population. The services range from full service funeral to direct cremation, which includes a selection of cremation option units.
