NANCY CLOSE GIBSON of AMHERST, MA, August 13, 1920 – November 4, 2013
AMHERST, Nancy Close Gibson, 93, died peacefully on Nov. 4 at Applewood in Amherst. She had been a full or part time resident of Amherst since 1946. After a childhood divided between Long Island and her mother’s natal home in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Nancy graduated from Skidmore College. During the war she studied art in Albany, and in years following she produced many fine paintings that her children cherish. She was an energetic and creative person in many directions, who sewed costumes for Kirby Theater at Amherst College, collected and refinished furniture, studied sculpture, created flower gardens, played the viola and the piano, and wrote and illustrated a book about American idioms for Japanese children. She was married for 67 years to William Walker Gibson, a professor at Amherst College and later at the University of Massachusetts. She loved the Connecticut River Valley and its bounty of summer vegetables and in her late eighties still called her children to say how beautiful the snow was. She is survived by four children, eight grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Obituary and memorial register at www.douglassfuneral.com.
